About Highlands
The Highlands is a family neighborhood: single-family homes on hilly streets, a well-used middle school, and easy access to the Bronx River Parkway. Much of the housing dates from the early-to-mid twentieth century, built as White Plains grew outward from downtown, with later infill mixed in.
Homes, buildings and their plumbing in Highlands
The hills that give the neighborhood its name also shape its plumbing problems. Storm water runs downhill and collects at low lots, so basement water and sump pump calls are a Highlands staple every spring. Inside, many homes still have a mix of original cast iron and mid-century copper; the copper has generally aged better than the drains.
Common plumbing issues we see in Highlands
- Basement water and sump pump failures on lower lots
- Aging cast-iron drain lines running slow
- Water heater replacements in garage and basement utility rooms
